I have mixed feelings on this proposal. Our Economic Development Masterplan calls for diversifying our economy. I think that you need to have a more resident-focused perspective. I sure wish the city would spend $91k helping out my neighbor who hasn’t been working or paid unemployment since July. Instead, you’re trying to get him to come downtown and spend money he doesn’t have. Why don’t you take those monies and help him get a work from home job so he can have the money to support downtown businesses. The truth is that without a continued influx of visitors our local economy is unsustainable and the local market of residents isn’t enough to sustain all of our businesses. Some will not make it. Some residents will be homeless. We need to transform our economy to work from home service-based industries. The visitors aren’t here and they aren’t going to be back at the same volume any time soon. Squeezing an already depressed economic region isn’t going to help.
