I am fully supporting the proposed ordinance to meet higher energy efficiency at city buildings. The City of Dunedin should consider hiring an independent energy efficiency consultant and building envelope consultant for each project. While renewable energy should play a role to achieve net zero, the best return on investment can come from designing the structure using efficient technologies from the beginning. Using only solar will require an oversized system. Buildings have many areas where energy is lost impacting the efficiency (windows, doors, wall system assemblies, roof systems, etc.) and independent professionals involved in the design and building construction can identify and provide proper energy modeling and return on investment calculations throughout the specific building service life. Technologies for efficiency have improved greatly in recent years. Implementing Dunedin's future projects with efficient, innovative designs can be another way for our city to shine.
